PRINT CLUB

Why a print club?

One of the things that we’ve lost in our increasingly tech-driven world is the opportunity to interact with real, physical objects. We consume media via screens and communicate via typing; we sent texts and emails that announce themselves with a ding on a phone. Even greetings and invites for special occasions are QR-coded! There’s something deliciously nostalgic about getting a letter in an envelope in the mail — the anticipation about what’s inside, the slitting open of paper and drawing the contents out. Someone, somewhere, has taken the time to package and address his to you specifically, and stuck a beautiful stamp on it. It’s travelled from their hand to your door, through a maze of intricate machinery, and into a mail carrier’s bag. A monthly print club brings back this analog world in which artisans share their work to provide subscribers with a signed art print, a letter, and extra goodies all year! As an added bonus, each month, one lucky subscriber will win the original artwork! I deeply value the tactile delight of creating and handling paper goods, and of using and displaying them. It’s a wonderful way I can share my work more widely and hopefully inspire others to engage with their creativity too.

My technique:

I paint from life, usually at life-size, directly onto watercolor paper with my brush and gouache paint. I aim for realism, but with painterly detail; if you look closely you can spot brush strokes and color layers that give depth and three dimensions to the subject.

Theme:

This year’s theme is APPLES. There’s something about an apple that I find so inviting to paint — their solidity, sometimes muscular shape, depth and variety of color, and nuanced textures. Each one seems to me an individual, posing for its portrait. Apples are a universally loved fruit associated with a world of lore and symbolism.
